Employee Engagement Replaced By Passionate Emptiness

Employee engagement replaced by passionate emptinessThis is not your ordinary career site. I help the corporate worker who toils away in the company cubicle make career transitions. You want to do your job well, following all the rules -- .The career transitions where I can help you center on three critical career areas: How to land a job, succeed in a job, and build employment security.Top 10 Posts on CategoriesHere’s the biggest employee engagement downfall in corporate life today: “Don’t take it personally, it’s business.” Like if you lay me off from a job, I’m supposed to think it isn’t personal, just business. Except that when you lay me off, it totally upends my life and completely changes what actions I need to take in order to care for myself and my family.Business is personal. Business is social. To take away the employee engagement that comes from taking your work personally takes away the satisfaction that comes from the work. When we take away the personal, the engagement that comes from work, we are left with empty actions, treating projects and people as though they are mere objects in a broad playing field. We do the work not because the work is engaging, satisfying and personal, but because it is a paycheck. There are big implications to objectifying the workplace. When we’re engaged in the work, we focus on what is best for doing our work and advocate for what we think is best for the business. We’re owners, wanting to do the best to support both our customers and ourselves. When we lose the employee engagement, we shrug our shoulders, don’t attempt to make whatever better and just do our job. We look at other people and start attacking them instead of the policy. Or people start attacking us instead of the policy. We call it office politics and it is even worse as each of us try to stay afloat in a recession, keeping a job to have a job and working to protect ourselves. We put up the shield of non-emotion, discount our passio n, and replace personal engagement with simply doing the work. When everything is “business, not personal,” we start gaming the systems. We tweak our numbers to make them look better, we strategize how to make the outcome the way we want it, rather than figuring out what is best for the department and the business. We care less about the customer as they simply become another factor in winning the game. Good business ethics become corrupt business ethics. Instead of engaging in the work, we engage in the game. Halo never had it so good. When management and the corporate experience drives people to ignore the personal in business, to mute the engagement in the work, people replace their passion with an emptiness that simply does the job. Takes the direction. Tries to figure out how to stay protected in the job. After all, it’s just a paycheck. That’s if they stay. The great employees, looking for the very best corporate experience, take about two looks at the environment and dec ide it is time to change. Which, by the way, substantially disengages them from their current job while they look for someplace that will make a difference.Employee engagement is not easy. Changing a corporate culture is not easy. When you run the “it’s just business, not personal” line, you change the corporate culture. Would you rather manage people who are engaged in the work, or manage people who have a passionate emptiness in what they do?After all, it’s just business. Not personal. This is not your ordinary career site. I help the corporate worker who toils away in the company cubicle make career transitions. FWDay2018 - Flexible work, its about finding your Xanadu

FWDay2018 - Flexible work, its about finding your Xanadu The year was 2001 and I had been working at IBM for about 2 years. They had introduced dial-up connections to enable your laptop to be accessed from home. I clearly remember my boss saying to me that he was going to work from home one day a week. My reaction was shock, joy and jealousy all at once. However, within the next 6 months, all the team began working from home at least a day a week. This was way before “flexible working” was the norm in Australia. We were so lucky. Over the next 10 years, I worked 80% from home around the kids, managing growing global teams and coordinating worldwide time zones. At one stage I memorised all APAC country time differences (as well as my children’s dance and sports schedules), so I knew when I could attend conference calls and meetings. What a juggle â€" but I loved every minute! My memory of those years was nothing but positive â€" I had an amazing career, was on tap for my family and all because I worked flexibly. What made this situation easier was the IBM measured employees on outcomes, recognised good work and provided amazing IT systems to support this type of work style. Working flexibly simply allowed me to contribute â€" at a corporate level, at home, as a sister, daughter, friend, wife and mother. In 2018, if employers don’t provide flexible working, they are missing out on a massive talent pool that would enhance their bottom line and build a positive culture. We are seeing a change in Australia and that is wonderful, but we still have a way to go. At the other end of the scale, I work with a number of senior people who would also love the opportunity to work flexibly; imparting their knowledge and mentoring others. This is a growing talent pool that Australian businesses could harness to create a new workforce of flexible employees â€" their investment would be returned 10fold. On this day of Flexible working â€" let’s embrace what Flexible working really means (for employers and employees): Fulfilment Life-changing Engagement Xanadu Integration Balance Learning Equality About Pam Pam Dell is a founding member of the FlexCoach panel of career and executive coaches. Does Your Career Have A Blueprint

Does Your Career Have A Blueprint Most expert manufacturers wouldnt fantasy about beginning an undertaking without a lot of outlines. The nitty gritty drawings are basic to managing the way toward building so no significant variables are forgotten about. The diagrams are analyzed, changed where potential issues are noted, and alluded to during the whole procedure. Your profession plans ought to have a lot of outlines, as well. They dont must be enormous bits of paper with charts on them, however there ought to be a cautiously considered arrangement that you follow to ensure all the significant components are being tended to. However, be cautious about making every one of those New Years Resolutions that end up overlooked in February! The Definition and Purpose of At-Will Employment

The Definition and Purpose of At-Will Employment The Definition and Purpose of At-Will Employment Freely work portrays the business connection among managers and representatives in about each state. This sort of work relationship implies that the organization doesn't offer tenure or ensured work for any period to any representative without an employment contract or composed heading from the CEO/President. With voluntarily work, either the organization or the worker can fire the business relationship whenever, with or without cause, and with or without notice. Desires for the Employer Freely business doesn't imply that businesses can self-assertively terminate representatives without great confidence correspondence, decency, and non-biased practices. Courts are progressively finding for workers in case when the business tells the representative that he has released him voluntarily. Bosses must show a decent confidence exertion to address the workers execution or different issues that prompted business end. The business needs to archive the representatives execution issues and the endeavors that were made to enable the worker to improve. This documentation is recorded in the workers faculty record. In the event that a claim happens because of business end, the business is ensured by the documentation that hinted at the work end. It is particularly obvious if the entirety of the reports are marked by the worker to show that she saw the records. Desires for the Employee In like manner, the representative has certain commitments to the business. Among these are to work with sensible expertise and care, do legitimate business orders and not unveil secret organization data. Specialists suggest that a representative gives his manager fourteen days notice when he stops. This notification permits the business and worker to tidy up last details. It additionally offers the business the chance to start searching for another representative before the bygone one leaves, limiting the measure of time the position is unfilled. Never Fire an Employee Just Because You Can Since we have voluntarily work ought to never be utilized as the motivation to terminate a representative. HR and business law legal counselors guidance can vary broadly on the amount to tell a worker at the end meeting, however neither HR nor the legal counselor would suggest telling the representative that the end is on the grounds that the business can. Its vastly improved to allude to the historical backdrop of representative exhibition gives that were reported en route. Essentially tell the representative that in light of the entirety of the exhibition issues talked about previously, his work is ended. Test Employment At-Will Policy It is a smart thought for managers to incorporate a work voluntarily strategy in their representative handbooks for simple reference. Coming up next is an example which ought to be modified to your business. The Company doesn't offer tenure or some other type of ensured work. Either the Company or the worker can fire the business relationship whenever, with or without cause, with or without notice. This is called Employment At-Will. This work voluntarily relationship exists paying little mind to some other composed explanations or arrangements contained in this Handbook or some other Company records or any verbal proclamation actually. The Interview Feedback Loop - Copeland Coaching

The Interview Feedback Loop I’ve been talking to a number of job seekers lately about illegal interview questions. They keep coming up, and I keep asking myself why that is. When you’re a job seeker, you may not realize how common illegal questions are because you’re interviewing for only one or two jobs at a time. But, surprisingly, they’re popping up in job interviews quite a bit. Common illegal questions include: What is your marital status? How many children do you have? Are you planning to have more children? How old are you? Honestly, it’s hard to understand why these questions are coming up. I have wondered how hiring managers don’t seem to know what not to ask. And, I’ve wondered why they’re even asking at all. In some cases, the hiring manager may be simply trying to make small talk. They may be trying to get to know you. But, it’s really hard to say. In some cases, the hiring manager is clearly asking the question for unethical reasons. But, in other cases, someone may have been trying to make casual conversation and may have unknowingly stumbled into murky waters. So, why does it keep happening? My best guess is this. Hiring managers are rarely trained on what not to ask. Human resources often assumes that in today’s day in age, we all know what not to ask. Then, when the hiring manager does ask these questions, the candidate doesn’t react negatively. The reason is this. If you want the job, you don’t get upset by a potentially off-putting question. That’s a fast way to eliminate yourself from the candidate pool. So, the hiring manager gets no feedback in the moment. After the hiring process, if you’re not selected, you have little to no interaction with the company. You are at times lucky to get an automated rejection email for your time. What’s a company to do? I propose that companies should install a system to solicit feedback from candidates. This would close the loop on hiring. The company could ask the candidate for anonymous feedback about their interview. It could then be routed to human resources who could be alerted to potential issues in questions. This would protect the company’s interests, educate the hiring manager, and improve the experience for the job seeker. It’s a win-win-win. One company that is implementing something similar to this process is Amazon. After a candidate interviews with Amazon, they receive an anonymous survey titled “rate our phone interviews.” The survey asks whether or not the interview experience was frustration free. It also asks for what they could do to improve, and it gives the job seeker a free form text box to provide feedback. Implementing this sort of feedback treats the job seeker like a valued player in the process â€" similar to a customer. And, this is a great foundation of mutual respect on which to build a future working relationship. I hope these tips have helped you. In any case, she didnt simply choose to at long last do it one day and stick with it the choice was significantly more nuanced than that. So as to accomplish her full progress, she exited her position at a Catholic college, movedfrom Philadelphia to San Franciscos Bay Area, and split up with her better half after over 30 years of marriage. Erica at that point turned into a transwoman working in a male-overwhelmed occupation and, a few years after the fact, shes as yet doing combating affirmed business segregatio n in spite of all her efforts.Of course, shes by all account not the only trans individual to confront separation however that is no surprise.LGBTQ segregation is rife.Approximately 1.4 million Americans recognize as transgender, as indicated by the Williams Institute. The Human Rights Campaign (HRC)s 2018 Corporate Equality Index digs into how trans laborers are dealt with and the yearly positioning that evaluates organizations LGBTQ-comprehensive practices and arrangements proposes that, until this point in time, 459 significant bosses have added rules intended to help transgender representatives while progressing. Likewise, a record 609 organizations got ideal scores from the HRC, up 18 percent from the 517 bosses that did so last year. But theres a great deal of work to be finished. LGBTQ laborers in the U.S. still think that its harder to get employed than everybody, with joblessness rates running a few times higher for transgender laborers, specifically, as per the U.S. Evaluat ion Bureau. Erica, for instance, was hoping to sidestep separation when she started scanning for a new position, however it appears as if she couldnt very departure it.At the time I settled on my ultimate conclusion to change, I got help from qualified clinical suppliers and a sexual orientation therapist, Erica, presently 67, says. It got evident in my work with them that I was unable to remain at the Catholic college, where I had been teacher and seat of social insurance the executives. Itwas worked by a moderate strict request of nuns, and the college couldn't considerably offer help freely to LGBTQ understudies out of dread that their exceptionally traditionalist graduated class and the ArchDiocese may question such culural changes and, accordingly, pull back support.Discrimination influences LGBTQ people in the workplace. So, in conference with her consultants, Erica chose to go after over again position ata universityin the Bay Area, where she was recruited as the seat of thedo ctoral program in clinical brain research. She accepted that colleagueswho were alsopsychologists would be more tolerating of her than her previous associates who were educators of the board and, in her experience, that rang true.I was living full time as a lady, Erica, in each aspect of my life wtih all the difficulties of significantly altering me in a total change: legitimate, clinical, social, professional and so forth., she clarifies, noticing that she had the most prominent and the most testing positions at the college while experiencing her clinical progress, including medical procedures. I was acknowledged well by my therapist partners and invited into the organization of other ladies, and I was generally treated well by peers, with a couple of narrow-minded exceptions. But all the managers at the college at her level or above were men, and, as per Erica, she was one day suddenly diminished by one of them. Erica says she knew the man didnt like her dependent on superfluous re marks hed made her sex character, and she felt emphatically that he was transphobic. In the wake of being brought into his office, she learned she was being downgraded and that her compensation was to be cut by $20,000 every year, as of now. Erica additionally claims that, following this discussion, she was efficiently avoided from workforce gatherings, denied showing assignments and, from numerous points of view, fought back against. She was not doled out to a program or office, either, something she asserts has never happened to another employee throughout the entire existence of the college. In this way, she questioned where she existed in the college network and says it felt like she was placed into exile. The EEOC still has a great deal of work to do.Today, Erica has an open objection with The U.S. Equivalent Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), which is as yet doing an examination concerning her continuous three years of supposed business segregation, she says. The EEOC re gularly needs to step in for cases like these, as oppression the trans network is still so across the board, something that trans dissident Lily Zheng affirmed. The coauthor of Gender Ambiguity in the Workplace: Transgender and Gender-Diverse Discrimination(with coauthor, Alison Ash Fogarty, PhD.),Zheng has recognized various types of segregation in her book loaded with interviews withtrans individuals.Theres such a wide scope of separation encounters that its difficult to tell where to begin, Zheng says. A portion of the individuals we heard stories from talked about having their trans status imparted to others without their authorization. Others were denied employments or terminated expressly in light of the fact that they were trans one trans lady was informed that talent scouts wouldnt contact her since they were told to maintain a strategic distance from competitors with lacks. The individuals who were noticeably sexual orientation nonconforming shared accounts of plain badgeri ng and antagonistic vibe: One individual got assault and passing dangers. Another, who filled in as an instructor, was gone up against by guardians and blamed for attempting to indoctrinate their youngsters. Pretty much every individual discussed microaggressions: sidelong looks, micromanaging, unintentional misgendering and other seemingly insignificant details that aggregately made an unfriendly workplace. Many LGBTQ feel compelled to shroud their characters at work.Zheng includes that, to get away from this discrimination, many of the individuals shed talked with decided to cover up their trans personalities in the workplace. But dissimilar to Erica who says she confronted conscious segregation, the expenses of this strategyfall solidly on the trans people passionate and mental well-being.Zhengknows what the enthusiastic and mental stresstoll feels like herself, as a strange and trans Asian-American individual, which she says feels a great deal like continually living between worlds .In secondary school, the understudies who had the most straightforward time tolerating me were the white LGBTQ+ understudies the contention I was encountering with my family driven me to dismiss the Asian-American side of me, which felt like an essential tradeoff to have my eccentric and trans personalities approved, she clarifies. Nonetheless, by school I started feeling like my white LGBTQ+ peers couldnt start to comprehend my Chinese-American foundation. That feeling of social vagrancy that I had a place in neither Asian-American spaces nor LGBTQ+ spaces is as yet one that I battle with today.Sheaddsshes been misgendered in each and every work environment at which shes ever worked. In one work environment, it was an error by a supervisor that I probably won't have seen had it not occurred again 10 minutes after the fact... what's more, again 10 minutes from that point forward, she says. In another working environment, it was from an associate who invested three fold the amount of energy saying 'sorry' as he did misgendering me. This isnt to state that both of these associates had vindictive expectations a remarkable inverse. In any case, neither of them were furnished to manage a trans representative, and their learning experience was my separation experience. For individuals who recognize as neither men nor ladies, including sex liquid individuals who may distinguish as both sooner or later, Zheng says that segregation ordinarily appears as sexual orientation policing. What's more, sex policing implies that others in the work environment pressure trans and sexual orientation assorted individuals to change the manner in which they look or act to adjust with the sex double. Obviously, when somebody needs to offset realness with the need to keep an occupation, it isnt sound for the worker or the company. Those who pick validness must arrangement with bias and segregation that limits their openings for work, while the individuals who pick their employments must arrangement with the dissatisfaction, nervousness, and other emotional wellness challenges that originate from stifling a significant piece of themselves, Zheng clarifies. At the point when associations can't make comprehensive situations for their trans and sex different workers, dilemma become the norm.In Ericas case, for instance, credibility was the way. Erica decided to experience her change while working and, at last, confronted working environment segregation as a result of it. Be that as it may, the main other decision for trans individuals like Erica to claim to bepeople theyre not to pacify their collaborators and managersleads to no better outcomes. We need work environments to have the option to honestly say theyre trans-comprehensive. What's more, so as to do that, Zheng says they have to viably bolster workers whose requirements differ/change after some time through strategy; engage and regard self-articulation, limit setting, and individual needs; and develop in light of evolving social, social, monetary, and political conditions in a way that is straightforward and incorporates representative criticism.- - AnnaMarie Houlis is an interactive media columnist and an experience fan with a sharp social interest and a liking for solo travel. Job Fairs how to get started University of Manchester Careers Blog

Job Fairs how to get started University of Manchester Careers Blog The aim of  today’s  blog is to help you get started at a careers fair. Careers fairs are the perfect opportunity for you to approach employers and make a great first impression. Before you even go to the fair there a few things you should do: Research the fair thoroughly as well as the employers exhibiting at the fairs before you go. Dress to impress, a first impression is key. Plan your visit: who will be there, where are they located in the venue, create a timetable of employer visits for yourself. Research your target companies, understand what they have to offer you in terms of jobs and who they have hired previously (LinkedIn). Prepare some intelligent questions for the recruiters at the fair, dont ask the same questions as everyone else, be original. Many international students in the UK focus upon the most visible opportunities with the major multinationals. This segment of the market as you can see from the picture is only a small part of the job market. Graduate training programmes can be very competitive for instance you can be competing with 5000 applicants for 10 positions. There is a large segment of the UK Graduate Job Market that is untapped. Dont be drawn in by the big names, Standout, think outside the box and see what other employers out there in the same sector/field have to offer. 5 Ways To Get Yourself Out Of A Career Funk - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

5 Ways To Get Yourself Out Of A Career Funk - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Having an “off” day is one thing; feeling like you’re constantly churning with no end in sight can exhaust you and result in a life of misery. In an era where the lines are blurry between work and life, feeling an overwhelming drudgery for your work is unhealthy for the mind and physical being. Whether you’re stuck in a career or certain predicaments have made you lost your way, below are five strategies to consider the next time you desperately need to break out of a career funk. 1.  Change your environment. In the 1950s, biologist Jonas Salk was working hard to find a cure for polio. No matter how much progress he made, the dark basement in Pittsburgh that he used as his laboratory just wasn’t stimulating the breakthroughs that he needed. So, Salk traveled to Assisi, Italy and stayed in a 13th century monastery to clear his head. His calming new environment proved to be beneficial and eventually, Salk’s head cleared and polio vaccine was developed. Knowing fully well the role his environment played in his success, Salk partnered up with architect Louis Kahn in 1959 to build the scientific facility Salk Institute in La Jolla, Calif. with the goal to create a facility worthy of a visit by Picasso” that serve as a “crucible for creativity.” But Salk isn’t the only successful person to realize just how important a role our environment plays in our thought process and creative abilities. Numerous studies have found that office design directly relates to innovation. This phenomenon is even more true in the modern workplace when we have smaller spaces to work with and more technologies to distract us from our tasks. The next time you’re feeling disengaged, take a look at the space around you. Is it cluttered? Are walls and high panels blocking your access to natural light? Does your space make you feel isolated and separated from the rest of your team? Is your desk messy or neat? There are benefits to both. A 2011 study found that rounded furniture is more pleasing and inviting compared to those with straight, sharp edges. Office plants are believed to increase happiness and lower stress levels. Certain music is said to boost productivity. And feeling better about your career is sometimes just a few organizational projects away. 2.  Organize priorities better. When your days are long and dreary and it seems you’ll never get through that long list that needs tackling, it might be time to think about prioritizing differently. First and foremost, learn how to say “no.” Saying “yes” to everything might make everyone else happy to work with you, but it won’t get you out of your always-churning, scrambled worklife. If you haven’t started making to-do lists yet, start now. David Allen, author of Getting Things Done  says if you don’t write things down, you won’t be able to know what’s most important. Why? Because your brain wasn’t made for “remembering and reminding,” he said in a video interview with Fast Company in 2008. Instead, your head is designed “for making intuitive choices about stuff.” When you don’t have tasks written down, your psyche won’t be able to prioritize effectively and you end up overcommitting to responsibilities. When you’re spread too thin because you haven’t prioritized your goals and values, it’s much harder to understand your purpose in life. 3.  Take up a new interest. Whatever you do, don’t let your mind get stale. It’s almost the worst thing that you can do to your career and your life, according to Robert Greene, author of the bestseller book The 48 Laws of Power.  When your brain gets rigid, creative breakthroughs are almost impossible because you’re not opening up your mind to full capacity. To inspire that kind of breakthrough, you need to loosen up your brain, almost like exercising the mind. When you feel bored with the work you’re doing, spend some time taking up a new interest or delving into a new subject that has nothing to do with your work to inspire new ideas and perspective. 4.  Open up your mind. Delving into a new interest is great way for coming up with innovative ideas and thinking differently about your work and life. Opening up your mind can alter the structure of your brain, easing the pain of work responsibilities that have become tedious. Various studies have found that meditation and other forms of relaxation have the ability to mold your brain and create new cells and pathways. One of the more popular classes offered at Google called Search Inside Yourself focuses on what’s happening in your brain when you have different emotions, allowing you to better reflect on emotions instead of react to them. This skill is crucial to have if you are feeling overwhelmed or your work has become tiresome and dull. 5. Know that you’ll never be ready â€" so do what makes you happy. When you think about what you want your life to look like in 20 years, what scenario would make you proud and happy? Is it a different position? Is it a new career? If this is the case, there is no better time to make your move than now. If you wait until you’re ready, it’s already too late. Think about the people who started before they were ready. Before Richard Branson became the business magnate he is today, he was a 16-year-old high school dropout looking to start a small student magazine. His small and humble recording studio became a massive record label and hundreds of companies followed shortly after. Whatever it is that you think will make you most happy, focus your energy on figuring out how to get there. Consider creating a career plan on Google Doc so that you can continuously add to this plan, look back on what you wanted five years ago, and see how far you’ve come. When work is so much a part of your life, hating the job you’re in can be hard to live with. While some feelings may come and go, if the funk you’re in seems to exist more often than not, take steps to shift your life in the direction you think will make you happiest. Remember, our careers are no longer something that most of us can leave at the office, so it’s important to identify your career funk quickly and climb out of it effectively.

How Does Each Generation View Work-Life Balance - Classy Career Girl

How Does Each Generation View Work-Life Balance Work-life balance is a  favorite topic of conversation nowadays. Everybody has something to say about it. However, the opinions can be very different regarding the topic depending on the generation that is discussing it. The idea that there is a dichotomy between work and lifestyle was first invented in the 19th Century, but it was only in the 1970s that the expression was used in the UK, while the United States only started mentioning it in the 1980s. Over the years, the approach and understanding of work-life balance have constantly been changing, and you can see what Baby Boomers, Generation X, and Generation Y and Millennials have to say about it. How Does Each Generation View Work-Life Balance? Baby Boomers: Career is The Most Important Thing Baby Boomers, children born just after the Second World War between 1956 and 1964, are used to a hard life. They had to break many rules and deal with the rebuilding of their countries in order to earn a decent living. For those and other reasons, baby boomers don’t understand why people expect to have a work-life balance. In their minds, a solid career is the only way to survival, so they work until exhaustion. And they think that this is how the things should be. Generation X: Dreaming of a Work-Life Balance Generation X, generally born from the mid-60s to mid-70s, are the sons and daughters of the baby boomers. They grew up watching their parents work hard, and they believe that this is the way to pay the bills. Still, Generation X got a feeling that living like this isn’t great. They might have seen how stressed their parents were after work, and they don’t want to go through the same. So they do their best to spend more time with their families, even when their jobs won’t allow them to â€" so they usually stress over guilt and are constantly running against the clock. [RELATED: 11 Work-Life Balance Tips From Men] Millennials: Work is Part of Life On the other hand, and as a consequence of the efforts of Generation X, the Millennials, or Generation Y,  dont see a point in trying to achieve a work-life balance. But not because they don’t care about it. It is just that they believe that work should be seen as part of life so that the dichotomy doesn’t really exist in practice. Typically considered as the children born from the mid-70s until mid-90s, Millennials will think that it is perfectly fine if you work hard because your job makes you feel alive and productive. So, yes, conversations about work over the weekends are perfectly fine to them. However, as a requirement, they expect that everybody has a job that he or she loves doing or what he or she have always dreamed. It can bring much frustration when things happen differently. And What  About Generation Z? Generation Z has just started looking for their first jobs. Born from the mid-90s to mid-2000s, it is still too early to say how they will deal with work-life balance. Still, many researchers will say that Gen Z will do much better at work than Millennials. They will still dream about doing what they love and what excites them. However, they will have a communitarian perspective instead of a selfish one. They want to make the world a better place. And it will make all the difference. The Bottom Line Baby boomers, Generation X, and Millennials each have their own way to see and seek work-life balance. They are all fighting for their beliefs in the same workplace nowadays. Which one is right? Its hard to say. It seems that the best way is your own particular way; the one that makes you wake up happy in the morning knowing that you have to go to work. So pick your favorite and have a good day at work!

7 Tips for Setting Up Your New At-Home Consultancy Business Office Space - CareerMetis.com

7 Tips for Setting Up Your New At-Home Consultancy Business Office Space Source -entrepreneur.comAccording to statistics, 62% of today’s millennialshave dreams of being able to own their own business one day. That’s more than half the millennial population who are sharing the same dream.Of course, having that dream and then making it a reality are two very different things. It takes a lot of hard work, money, time, and motivation to come up with a business plan, follow through on it, and open the doors for business. For many people who start their own business, they need to keep things small to start with, often operating their business out of their own home to cut down on expenses.evalPerhaps this is the path you’ve been following, and you are getting ready to open the doors to your new at-home consultancy business. Just because you have your financing in place, your marketing plan set up, and a business plan doesn’t mean you’re quite ready to jump in. There is the small matter of setting up your actual office. With that in mind, here are 7 tips you can use that will help you set up your new at-home consultancy business office space.1. Choose a Dedicated Office Space with PrivacyThe first thing you’ll need to do is figure out where your home office will be. Ideally, it should be a spot that offers privacy, especially if you will have clients visiting your office. You want it to look professional and organized, so a space that is separate from the rest of your home is ideal. This means you should also be thinking about a separate entrance into the office, or at least having it located near the main entrance in your home so that people don’t have to walk all the way through your space. With consultancy businesses, it’s often common to meet with clients face-to-face, even if just on an occasional basis. If you won’t be meeting with clients in your office, access to a door isn’t going to be essential. You’ll still want privacy though, so that you can have peace and quiet while working.2. Make a List of the Essential I temsNow it’s time to make a list of essential office items; these are the tools and equipment you need to do your job. This typically will include a desk, chair, computer, printer, and phone, as well as chairs for clients/customers.Obviously, if you don’t have a lot of space you want to be sure you don’t purchase over-sized furniture.3. Think About Storage and OrganizationevalIt’s also important to give thought to how you plan to store and organize documents and materials in your office space. The last thing you want to deal with is having files and papers strewn about your office, as this disorganization can affect your productivity.Investing in a high-quality filing cabinet is usually wise, and you may want to add cabinets or a shelving system for extra storage.4. Make Sure the Lighting is RightBecause your business is new, there’s a good chance you’ll be putting in a lot of hours and overtime. With that said, you want to make sure your lighting needs are covered, incl uding overhead lighting and task lighting. This will make it much easier to concentrate on your work and will help to prevent eye strain from occurring.5. Personal Décor TouchesevalJust because you are creating an office space doesn’t mean you can’t and shouldn’t add décor touches. Again, this is a space you will be spending a lot of time in, so it should be welcoming, inviting, and calming.Typical décor touches can include artwork, houseplants, drapes, statues and figurines, a decorative clock, a neutral color on the walls, and anything else that helps the space feel finished and professional.Of course, a big part of creating that “professional” space is to ensure you frame all of your accreditations, such as degrees and diplomas. Church Hill Classics offers a variety of stylish and professional-looking diploma framesthat you can customize to suit your office space. Not only does this add a décor element, it’s also important to have your diploma visible when customers and clients meet with you. It will help to build your credibility.6. Create a Beverage and Snack StationThe final tip is to create a beverage and snack station. Again, you’ll be putting in long hours in your office space, so consider setting up a coffee maker and small fridge with cold beverages and snacks stored in it.This can be a nice touch when you have clients in the office, as you’ll be able to offer them a cold or hot drink when they arrive.7. A Productive and Professional SpaceSetting up a productive and professional office space for your brand-new consultancy business is a big step in the success of your company. An organized and well-designed space will help you stay focused on your daily tasks, make a great impression on your clients, and work toward solidifying your future in the industry.

Are happy workers more productive My debate with Jan Kristensen. - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog

Are happy workers more productive My debate with Jan Kristensen. - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog Last week I had a debate on whether happiness at work increases productivity or not against Jan Kristensen who is Lean Director at Novo Nordisk. It was a lively and at times contentious debate in front of an engaged audience and we filmed the whole thing and have put it online. There are three videos: My initial presentation (above), Jans presentation and then a discussion. I applaud Jan for his willingness to do this debate and I admire his clearly heartfelt dedication to creating more efficient and productive workplaces. You can download our slides here and see pictures from the event here. In my (admittedly biased) opinion, after having read Jans phd thesis and done the debate, its clear that there is ample evidence that happiness makes us more productive in the workplace and very little evidence against this. As best I can tell, Jan offered 3 specific arguments for his assertion that happy workers are no more productive than unhappy ones. 1: 14 original studies Jan claims there are 14 original studies, which everyone in this field cites as proof that happy workers are more productive but that those 14 studies in fact show the exact opposite. He only mentions one of those 14 studies (hawthorne) so its hard to evaluate his claim. But lets say we grant him this. It still doesnt support his position. Even if every single one of those 14 studies could be invalidated, it would not serve at all to disprove all the studies that have come since them. I quote several of those studies in my presentation. 2: Low correlation Jan states that the best correlation found in meta-studies shows a correlation between happiness and productivity of 0.25, which is too low for his liking. But a low correlation is still a correlation, so at the very least we can say that happiness and productivity are connected. And as I showed in my presentation, there are also studies showing causation, i.e. showing that happiness causes productivity. 3: Difficult to implement Jans final argument is that he and his HR colleagues have tried to implement happiness in Novo and that it has failed every time. The logical flaw in this argument is clear: Peoples ability or inability to implement it has no bearing on whether or not the theory is true. As best I can tell, Jan offers no further arguments in support of his position. Your take Whats your take on this are happy people more productive? Are happy workplaces more profitable? What evidence have you seen that supports your position? Please write a comment, Id love to know your take. Thanks for visiting my blog.
